This ancient temple is at Mattancherry in Ernakulam district. The Brahmins of Goa had to travel south to escape from the attacks by the foreigners, to avoid forced conversion to their religion and to protect and preserve their beliefs, culture and language. Lord Parasurama divided the Brahmins into different sects and made them stay on the banks of river Saraswati. Each of them had been assigned Kula Devatas also. They later came to Konkan and then Gosripuram. They consecrated their Kula Devatas in the different villages around Gosripuram. Mahalasa Devi of Mattancherry was also consecrated by them. The original Mahalasa temple is at Mardol in Goa.
more For the last 84 years, members of the family of Hari Bhatt have been looking after the temple. They had taken it from the original owners who were incapable of looking after the affairs of the temple. They first consecrated the Goddess in a small thatched shed and then built the present temple. The main consecration has Sree Venugopalakrishna with Rugmini and Sathyabhama above and Kalabhairava, an incarnation of Sree Rydra as a bodyguard below and Sree Mahalasa Devi with a horse in the middle.
