Vaikunteswara Santhana Gopalamoorthy Temple

History

This temple is at Puzhavath in Changanassery. It was built between 1811 and 1815 when Ayilyam Thirunal Gouri Lakshmy Bai was ruling Travancore. When Avittam Thirunal Balarama Varma died in 1810, there were no heirs to the throne. The Royal family had adopted Keralavarma from Kolathunadu but the British Resident Lord Manroe was against making him the king. At a time when it seemed that the British would take over the administration, Rani Lakshmi Bai of Attingal assumed power as the ruler of Travancore.  She had only a daughter at that time. Prayers were conducted to bless the Rani with a son. Her husband Rajaraja Varma Valiya more Koy Thampuran belonged to the Changanassery Lakshmipuram Palace. He built a temple for Santhanagopala Moorthy near the palace and offered worship there to be blessed with children. On 16th April 1813, Lakshmi Bai gave birth to Swathi Thirunal and in 1814 to Uthram Thirunal. Both of them ruled Travancore. The temple is at Puzhavathil, close to the palace. It was built by the Travancore Royal family. As the temple was under the direct administration of the Palace and as the Paradevata of the temple was consecrated in it, the temple came to be known as Puzhavath Kottaram Temple. The extent of the land and the structure of the temple speak of the eminence of the Royal family.  The sanctum is square. The idol of Mahavishnu seated on a throne is three feet high and faces the east. The idol bears the conch and the Sudarshana chakra in two hands and the other two hands is a small child. This is a very rare idol in the whole of India. There is a square Namaskaram mandapam showing the Kerala Dravidian style of architecture. The base and the pillars are made of granite while the roof is tiled.
