Kadalayi Sree Krishna Temple, located in Chirakkal, Kannur, is dedicated to Lord Vishnu and holds deep historical and mythological significance. According to legend, the temple's idol was consecrated by Sathyabhama, Lord Krishna's consort, around 5,000 years ago. The temple's annual festival begins on the 15th of the Malayalam month of Makaram (January) with the ceremonial flag hoisting (Kodiyettam) and concludes on the 22nd of Makaram with the holy bath (Arattu). Other significant celebrations include Ashtami Rohini, Guruvayoor Ekadashi, and the Mandala Pooja. The temple is steeped in legends, including one from the Mahabharata, where Sathyabhama, while worshipping an idol of Lord Vishnu, failed to notice Lord Krishna standing
more beside her. Upset, Krishna kicked the idol, breaking its right side, and it was later lost in the sea. The idol was eventually recovered by a fisherman and brought to the Kolathiri Raja, the ruling king at the time, who was searching for a suitable deity for a temple he had built in Kadalayi village, 6 km from North Paravur. After consulting an astrologer and receiving favourable signs, the idol was installed at what is now known as Kadalayi Sree Krishna Temple, although it is located in Chirakkal. The temple retains its original name, Kadalayi, despite the location change.
