Arayanakavu Bhagavathy Temple

History

This temple is at Arayankavu in Ernakulam District. Earlier this place was overgrown with vegetation. It belonged to the Brahmin family of Puthuvamana who were the local landowners. Some of their workers belonging to the Araya community were assigned to clear the vegetation there. The sickle of one of the women working there touched a stone and blood started oozing out. The woman fainted and her companions informed the Puthuvamana family about it. The eldest member of the family came to the spot and recognized an unnatural halo around the stone. He gathered whatever was available there and offered Bhagavathy a puja. Immediately the flow of blood more stopped. Soon the area was cleared and the family's eldest member built a small temple there. The member of the Manayathatt Illam nearby was appointed as the Chief Priest. The presence of the Goddess is also seen at the Manayathatt Illam. That original consecration continues to this day though a bigger temple structure has been constructed for the convenience of the devotees. Even today a member of the Puthuvamana family performs the puja for twelve days in the month of Vrischikam, on the day of stars Pooyam, Aayilyam and Makkom in the month of Meenam and performs twelve thousand Pushpanjalis with the chief priest on Mahanavami day. Since the presence of the effulgence was first noticed by the members of the Araya community, the Goddess came to be known as Arayankavilamma.
